III. READING (2.0 points) Passage 1. Read the text, choose the best answer, and write it on the answer sheet. TWEENBOTS
Imagine the busy streets of New York City, an enormous place with millions of people. Every day, the streets are congested with people going about their daily lives. Now imagine a small robot in the middle of all of those people rolling down a busy sidewalk. Most people would not even notice that ten-inch smiling robot called a Tweenbot, rolling along the street. This strange machine may interest some people, while others would ignore it completely. A researcher interested in studying how helpful people really are uses such robots in her experiments that take place on the streets of New York. The Tweenbots experiment is the idea and creation of Kacie Kinzer. Kinzer’s idea was to make a robot that could navigate the city and reach its destination only if it was aided by pedestrians. Tweenbots rely on the kindness of warm-hearted strangers. Made simply of cardboard, wheels, and a device to turn the wheels, the Tweenbots face many dangers on the city streets. They could be run over by cars or smashed by careless kids. Kinzer thought her little robots might even be seen as some kind of terrorist device. The only real protection a Tweenbot has is its friendly smile. In addition to that, each of Kinzer’s robots is fitted with a flag that displays instructions for the robot’s destination. The only way these robots will reach their final point is if someone lends them a hand. Tweenbots are essentially a social experiment aimed at providing people a chance to show how caring they are. On a daily basis, people in New York City are often in a hurry to get around. However, the Tweenbots, through their inability to look after themselves, took people out of their normal routines. The people who noticed the helpless little robots were actually interested in helping the Tweenbots find their way home. Tweenbots move at a constant speed and can only go in a straight line. If one was to get stuck, or was going in the wrong direction, it would be up to strangers to free it or turn it in the right direction. Surprisingly, no Tweenbot was lost or damaged, and each one arrived at its target in good condition. In fact, most people treated the robot in a gentle manner, and some even treated it as though it were a small living being. Staying on trend is an iconic symbol for many people, and by understanding this, clothes are no longer designed for sustainable use. This paves the way for the development of fast fashion. Fast fashion refers to fashionable clothes that copy the latest styles from catwalks and are sold at a low price. These copycat versions are mass-produced to meet consumers’ appetites for up-to-the-minute styles, especially youngsters. However, such growth comes at a cost, as it has led to both environmental and social consequences. According to the UN Environment Program (UNEP), the fashion industry is the second-largest water consumer, requiring 2,700 litres of water to produce a plain T-shirt and 6,800 litres of water for a pair of jeans. Such depletion of non-renewable resources undoubtedly contributes to the clean water crisis in different parts of the world. It is also responsible for about 10% of carbon emissions which is more than the amount of aviation and maritime shipping pollution combined. From manufacturing to delivery, the entire process releases 1.2 billion tonnes of CO₂ into the environment every year. Besides environmental impacts, certain social consequences need to be taken into account. Workers in third countries, such as Bangladesh, are required to work up to 14 hours a day to meet order requirements from fashion companies. This situation has not only posed serious health risks to employees but has also exposed the exploitation of human labour. Moreover, workers have also faced unfair wages for their actual performance, as most brands want to maximise their profit. With such low payments, employees are unable to cover daily expenses such as housing or childcare. The only way to tackle this issue is by shifting customers’ shopping behaviours. Individuals should prioritise needs over desires for clothes ownership and try to extend the life cycle of clothes by selling old clothes and buying second-hand items.

It only seems like yesterday that I left home but it’s already been six months. How time flies! Since I came here, I have not only learned a lot about Britain’s culture, but also made a lot of friends from all over the world. Even more importantly, my experience here has inspired me a lot and positively changed some of my perspectives. My studies have been going really well and I love my new course. Fitting in has been a major issue because my culture, food and background are completely different from everyone else. Still, I love these differences because it means that I have so much to learn. B

I have always been taught to accept all information taught in textbooks, and the teacher was always right, there was no room for arguments or disagreements. I just had to accept and memorise facts.
